Dorus Arts was born in 1901. He took lessons at the studios of Gorter, Jan Toorop, Van Vucht Tijssen, and Jurres. With these masters he perfected his talent for drawing, etching and painting.

He belonged to a group of painters in Nijmegen called "In Consten Een", who were active in the first part of this century. He was also a member of the Pulchri Studio in The Hague.

His first exhibition was in 1929 in De Waag building in Nijmegen. A year later he was awarded an honorary medal from the city council. Between 1930 and 1961, his landscapes, beach scenes and twilight and moonlight panorama.
