About the artist:
Frederick William Hutchison (1871–1953)
Born in Montreal in 1871, Frederick Hutchison began his artistic journey at the Art Association of Montreal under the guidance of William Brymmer (1855–1925). He later studied in Paris with renowned artists Benjamin Constant and Jean-Paul Laurens. In 1910, Hutchison further honed his craft at the Art Students League in New York under the mentorship of William Merritt Chase, during which he adopted a more impressionistic approach to landscape painting.
In 1928, Hutchison traveled to Europe, where he reconnected with his friend Clarence Gagnon, who was living in Paris at the time. The two, along with their partners, spent the year touring Europe. Despite this experience, Hutchison found that he did not "connect" with the European landscapes and painted little during this time, focusing more on the journey than on his art.
Hutchison’s connection to the Isles aux Coudres is highlighted in his painting of the same name. During his travels in Quebec, Hutchison was inspired by the stunning landscapes of the region, which reflected his impressionistic style. The painting of Isles aux Coudres captures the serene beauty of the islands, with its gentle rolling hills, vibrant waters, and the distinctive charm of rural Quebec. Hutchison’s use of light and color, as well as his ability to convey the tranquil atmosphere of the place, made this work a notable example of his ability to translate his experiences of the natural world into art. The islands, with their unique and picturesque landscapes, served as the perfect muse for Hutchison’s artistic vision, leaving a lasting imprint on his oeuvre.
This piece stands as a testament to the beauty of the area and Hutchison’s skill in capturing the essence of the landscape in his more impressionistic technique.
